Message From President
Established in 1982, our not-for-profit professional membership organization is committed to promoting mediation as an effective means for addressing family conflicts and decisions. We have played a vital role in establishing mediation as a superior means for resolving family issues. We provide ongoing training for mediators through our annual conferences and consultation services.
MCI established one of the first set of Mediation Standards in the United States and continues to promote excellence in the mediation profession. We continue to provide the public with information about mediation and to provide a referral list of mediators.
MCI “Referral “member family mediators are listed on this website for your convenience. These mediators have demonstrated compliance with MCI's standards regarding education, experience, and annual continuing education. Referral members also pledge to adhere to the "MCI Standards of Practice" for family mediators.
Our members are committed to providing a process for disputing parties to arrive at their own, individualized agreements, avoiding the stress, delay and expense of litigation.
Jerald A. Kessler, JD

About Mediation Council of Illinois – Established in 1982
The Mediation Council of Illinois is a professional membership organization that provides the general public with information about family mediators throughout the state of Illinois. The Council was established in 1982 and is the oldest statewide mediation organization in the United States. We played a major role in establishing mediation in Illinois.
The mediators who are listed on the MCI Referral Directory have met MCI’s membership requirements for education and training. While MCI does not evaluate the performance of individual Referral member family mediators, it does require Referral members to abide by the MCI Professional Standards of Practice for Mediators, including compliance with grievance procedures and an agreement to follow acts of discipline set forth by the Council. Referral members must also maintain their credentials, professional liability insurance, and satisfy MCI's annual continuing education requirements. Additionally, MCI provides its membership mentoring opportunities and guidance, as well as opportunities to confer with and receive advice from experienced practitioners. Historically, family mediators have been the best trained mediators in the profession.
For this reason, they are frequently called upon to mediate other types of disputes.
